About Anita M. King

taken at the 2010 NaNoWriMo Night of Writing Dangerously

I have a secret. I really, really, really like words.

Okay, so maybe that’s not such a big secret. After all, I do work in the English department of a local community college as an English tutor and supplemental instruction leader for fundamental skills and English as a second language courses. I’m also an avid reader, fiction podcast listener, and aspiring fantasy writer. But I’ve only participated in National Novel Writing Month every year since 2003.

That’s not so many words, right?

If you asked me how long I’ve been writing, I’d give you a different answer every time. I’d tell you that I’ve been writing since I was six years old and dictated stories about possessed vacuum cleaners to my mom. I’d tell you I’ve been writing since I started my first “novel” about a sword-wielding girl knight and her talking dragon companion at the age of 12. I’d tell you I’ve been writing since I finished my first rough draft of melodramatic teenaged angst-filled whatever the fall after I graduated from high school. Or maybe I’d tell you I’ve been writing since last Tuesday, when I had my latest realization that I really do like this whole putting-words-on-a-page thing.

I won Best Short Form in the first annual O’Keefe Prize for Graphic Literature with my short comic, “Origami Frogs,” which is viewable here along with the entries that won in the other categories.

In the end, I’m just a San Francisco Bay Area word-nerd who likes knitting, social justice, stormy weather, the occasional foray into armchair theology, and various bits of geekery.

You can find me on Twitter and Formspring.

Actually Little Girl, you were dictating stories when you were 3 or 4. I still have them somewhere.

Good to know. :-p The earliest I remember dictating was when I was six.

Armchair theology? and big-O orthodox? You must like Athanasius, too.

Thank you, Laith! I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to respond (I’ve been in my annual post-NaNoWriMo/end-of-the-semester hibernation), but I really appreciate that you thought of my blog for your nominations. I’ve been putting some thought into nominations of my own, and I hope to have those up soon!
