Friday Freewrite #52 – Littered

April 12, 2013

Freewriting is an exercise in timed, stream of consciousness writing. It’s a fun and useful activity for writers of all types. Every week, I’ll provide a prompt as a springboard for freewriting. For more information on what freewriting is all about and how to do it, see this post.

Today’s prompt is a first line:

“The path ahead was littered with…”

*****

I hope this prompt has stirred some interesting thoughts and ideas for you! Freewriting is inherently messy and sometimes deeply personal, but if you feel comfortable sharing your results, please post as little or as much as you’d like in the comments.

The path ahead is littered with lies and toothbrushes.

    RWAR! BEHOLDEN!

The path ahead was littered with rubble, stern with shreds of bodies. I froze on the pile of rubble overlooking the smoking chaos. The buzz of drones above echoed off the remaining buildings around me. I did this? I gulped, I tried to, but the dryness of my throat barely let me breath. I took a step further feeling the crunch and shift of rubble beneath my heeled boots, and I kept going.

The echoing chirp of cellphones replaced the birds that normally sing at this hour. Everything, everyone I came across was destroyed. Then I heard it. A sobbing, coming from the cafe up ahead, and… radio speak.
As I crunched the glass in the doorway, I saw a man. I gasped as I seen his jacket. Domestic Military.
“SIr! Shes coming youre way! Shes right on top of you!” I heard something speak in his ear.
He rocked and slowly cradled a woman and child. I didnt need to see them to know. they too were in this dream. I remember they were eating to together when I walked in and…
“so, returning to the scene of the crime huh?” He snarled slowly twisting his head toward me.
“I. Im sorry, but it wasnt me!” I said. As I spoke the words, my heart dropped, and his rage flared.
Oh really? So you slaughtering my family and our cities innocents on national TV wasn’t enough? Now you’re hear to taunt me with ghost talk?” He sat their heads down slowly and stood up. Ive never seen a DM captain in person before. Then again, ive never did….this! Ever.
