Friday Freewrite #36 – Tangled

June 22, 2012

Freewriting is an exercise in timed, stream of consciousness writing. It’s a fun and useful activity for writers of all types. Every week, I’ll provide a prompt as a springboard for freewriting. For more information on what freewriting is all about and how to do it, see this post.

*****

Today’s prompt is a first line:

“All tangled up in the middle of the floor…”

*****

I hope this prompt has stirred some interesting thoughts and ideas for you! Freewriting is inherently messy and sometimes deeply personal, but if you feel comfortable sharing your results, please post as little or as much as you’d like in the comments.

I watched the tiny kittens, all tangled up in the middle of the floor; a mewling mess mess of wide eyes, pink noses, and soft, gray fur. I envied their obliviousness from the safety of the couch. Soon, the heap settled, a few yawns escaping from below a layer of paws and fur. The room was so suddenly quiet that it caught me by surprise. My home, usually so full of life, had fallen eerily silent. I felt so out of place in the silence. My fingers slid into my coat pocket, pulled out my iPod, and pressed play — music pouring out to fill the empty void. But, even with the comfort of noise, I couldn’t help feeling like I wasn’t entirely alone.

Kittens! I like the sudden shift you make in the tone of the image here.

I couldn’t help myself xD I read the prompt and automatically thought of kittens! But I’d probably been home alone when I wrote that, and being in any house alone is kinda creepy o.o
