Friday Freewrite #21 – Bag

January 21, 2012

Freewriting is an exercise in timed, stream of consciousness writing. It’s a fun and useful activity for writers of all types. Every week, I’ll provide a prompt as a springboard for freewriting. For more information on what freewriting is all about and how to do it, see this post.

Today’s prompt is a first line:

“I reached into the bag and felt around until I found…”

I hope this prompt has stirred some interesting thoughts and ideas for you! Freewriting is inherently messy and sometimes deeply personal, but if you feel comfortable sharing your results, please post as little or as much as you’d like in the comments.

I reached into the bag and felt around until I found something squishy and soft. It felt almost like Jell-o, but I knew that it wasn’t. Or at least I hoped it wasn’t Jell-o. I really didn’t want to deal with cleaning out the bag. It wasn’t even my bag anyway. I took my hand out and checked for signs of Jell-o leakage. Fortunately my fingers were not sticky or covered in lime green goo. I reached back into the bag and groped around until I found what I had been searching for in the first place, my sister’s car keys. “Thanks Sally, I found them.”
“You’re welcome, and please don’t crash my car, it’s new.”
    “Alright. Bye.”
